Position Overview
The Maintenance Manager is responsible for the safe, efficient operation and maintenance of the indoor ice arena refrigeration plant, building mechanical systems, and all associated indoor and outdoor sports facilities.
This position is a key member of the overall management team and reports directly to the Facility Director. The Maintenance Manager supervises arena operations staff and seasonal outdoor employees and provides coverage for the Facility Director when required.
Core Responsibilities
Ice Arena & Plant Operations
- Operate and maintain the refrigeration plant and mechanical systems in accordance with Prairie HVAC recommendations and industry best practices.
- Oversee heating, ventilation, dehumidification, and building control systems.
- Monitor and troubleshoot refrigeration equipment and building management systems.
- Maintain ice quality standards including resurfacing schedules and equipment oversight.
- Develop and manage preventative maintenance schedules for all plant equipment.
- Determine when skilled trades or external contractors are required.
- Maintain required operational logs, safety documentation, and compliance records.
- Ensure compliance with Workplace Safety & Health, WHMIS, and applicable regulations.
Facility Cleaning & Grounds Oversight
- Manage general arena cleaning standards including stands, lobby areas, dressing rooms, and common spaces.
- Ensure snow removal from sidewalks, entrances, emergency exits, and facility access points.
- Maintain exterior grounds in a clean, safe, and accessible condition year-round.
- Develop cleaning and maintenance schedules and monitor quality control.
Outdoor Sports Facilities & Grounds
- Oversee maintenance of baseball diamonds, soccer fields, and surrounding grounds.
- Implement seasonal turf and field maintenance programs.
- Coordinate snow removal, grass cutting, and site preparation.
- In conjunction with the Facility Director and Sports Director, coordinate with leagues, user groups, and community stakeholders to ensure facility readiness.
Facility & Event Operations
- Assist in planning and implementation of capital and operational projects.
- Support event setup and takedown logistics as required.
- Oversee minor building maintenance including plumbing, painting, carpentry, welding, and mechanical repairs.
- Operate and utilize facility management and purchasing systems.
- Assist in budget tracking for maintenance operations and supply procurement.
Leadership & Management Responsibilities
- Supervise 2–4 part-time arena operations staff.
- Recruit, train, and supervise seasonal outdoor employees.
- Foster a team-oriented environment focused on safety, accountability, and service excellence.
- Provide scheduling, performance management, and operational oversight.
- Serve as a member of the management team and provide coverage for the Facility Director when required.
